Italian Lessons
ALI LE-MAR
Mole came to us three years ago, aged seven weeks, an adorable little bundle with knowing, humanlike eyes. He is a special breed of dog called Italian spinone, sometimes referred to as Italian griffon. With long, droopy ears, a full beard, and a mustache, he looks like a comical, pipe-smoking old duke. Mole approaches the world with a laid-back attitude, meaning he does everything in his own time and his own way. But don’t let that fool you; his muscular seventy-pound body is a testament to two thousand years’ worth of hunting-dog genes.
What we initially thought was stupidity and stubbornness turned out to be intelligence and sagacity. At gundog training, our other dog will go like a bat out of hell, in a dead-straight line, through thick, prickly undergrowth to retrieve the object. Mole, on the other hand, will assess the situation and work out the best way to go around obstacles, regardless of how long it takes. Mole thinks deeply about things and how to carry out tasks. When everyone assumes he’s just goofing off or confused, or has lost the scent altogether, he suddenly gets the job done.
Mole also goes to agility classes — in fact, he’s become an agility superstar, once again proving everybody wrong. No one expected such a big, lumbering dog to be so quick and agile. Our Mole is full of surprises!
We compete all over the country at field archery events, and our dogs come too. Wherever we go, people stop us, wanting to meet him and ask about him. Sometimes it gets a bit crazy as we travel only a few yards before the next person stops us. They usually talk to him before they talk to us. We have been fortunate to meet some lovely people through Mole!
Earlier this year Mole began to limp, favoring one leg, and we could find no obvious cause. Rest didn’t improve the situation, so we took him to the vet for further testing. I received the devastating news when my other half was away attending a seminar: Mole had an incurable bone cancer, painful and extremely rare in a dog of his youthful age. I called my partner, and he came home right away. Our world seemed to collapse as we faced Mole’s terrible prognosis. We prepared to say good-bye to our dear sweet friend.
The vet wasn’t prepared, however, to give up on Mole. He persuaded us to have his leg amputated, saying that we had to give him that chance. We didn’t want to put Mole through any further pain, but the vet reassured us that he would soon heal, and the pain would be minimal. We agreed to go ahead.
It was an exhausting, emotional time for us, second-guessing our decision. Would Mole ever again be able to do any of the things he loved? Would this operation just prolong a painful disease that might kill him anyway? What would the quality of his life be?
Word spread about Mole’s condition. Messages of love
